AFA's Communities of Practice

Central to AFA’s mission is to develop the field of apprenticeship practitioners. We accomplish this by bringing together individuals and organizations in our Communities of Practice. These cross-functional groups convene experts, advocates, and practitioners from across the apprenticeship ecosystem to share knowledge, generate innovative ideas, and solve apprenticeship’s most pressing problems.

What is a Community of Practice?

Communities of Practice (CoPs) are groups whose members share common concerns and passions and are eager to improve their personal practice – and the broader ecosystem – through peer connection. These Communities provide a venue for practitioners to share ideas, ask questions, and support each other. Both learning and direct action are central to CoPs, and members use the knowledge they gain to generate tangible outcomes.

What do the Communities of Practice focus on?

AFA operates five Communities of Practice: the Business-Led Apprenticeship Solutions Team, our Consulting Network, and three sector-specific groups.

Categories

Community Colleges

Community colleges represent a crucial component of the apprenticeship ecosystem, with the potential to act as key delivery architecture. This Community of Practice focuses on aligning higher education priorities & infrastructure with apprenticeship, accessing funding, and engaging with key stakeholders including regulatory agencies, accreditors, and faculty.

Manufacturing Industry

The manufacturing sector has been a vital part of America’s workforce past, and continued innovation will ensure it remains central to the country’s future. However, there are persistent, significant skills and talent gaps in the sector which could be addressed through apprenticeship. This Community of Practice focuses on addressing supply chain management concerns through workforce planning, supporting an aging workforce ,and providing opportunities for new talent to emerge natively & organically.

Healthcare Industry

The healthcare sector is facing an unprecedented shortfall in qualified professionals, a problem that has been made significantly worse due to the COVID pandemic and recent changes to immigration policy. Apprenticeship has enormous potential to reverse this worrying trend. This Community of Practice focuses on building shared understanding between regulatory agencies, employers, and educators to reduce friction, and integrating apprenticeship into existing healthcare career pathways.

What do the Communities of Practice do?

Our Communities of Practice do much more than just network. These groups are geared towards innovation and action. Members engage in the following ways:

  • Gain valuable knowledge, new perspectives, and critical connections with peers and likeminded individuals
  • Develop an advocacy agenda that supports the group’s industry and focus area
  • Take actions that advance apprenticeship such as piloting new program models, hosting virtual and in-person convenings, and developing field-building resources including guides, reports, or critical analyses

How do I join a Community of Practice?

Our Communities of Practice are open to AFA members. (If you are not yet an AFA member, you can sign up here.)
