Online
Thursday 02 Oct 2025
12:00 PM - 1:00 PM
Event Information
Join us for a compelling conversation with Tom Bewick, author of the forthcoming book Skills Policy in Britain and the Future of Work, as he unpacks over a century of UK skills policy, its implications for the future, and lessons for U.S. policymakers.
Drawing on his extensive experience as a policy adviser, academic, and commentator, Tom will explore the political and economic forces that have shaped workforce development from the 1881 Royal Commission on Technical Instruction to today’s economy. With over 25 years of experience shaping post-compulsory education and training, Tom brings a wealth of insight into the evolving landscape of skills, apprenticeships, and productivity.
Currently a visiting professor of skills and workforce policy at Staffordshire University and a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Tom has served as a government adviser, policy consultant, journalist, and academic. His forthcoming book, Skills Policy in Britain (Bristol University Press, 2025), explores the challenges and opportunities facing the UK’s skills agenda in a rapidly changing world.
His book offers a bold historical-political analysis, challenging conventional thinking and proposing a new framework for understanding the evolution of skills policy through four distinct "training states."
Whether you're a policymaker, educator, student, or simply interested in the intersection of politics and workforce development, this session will offer fresh insights and practical takeaways.
