Making Apprenticeship Degrees Work at Scale brings together interviews from twenty-three leading practitioners and illustrates the range of approaches educational institutions are taking in developing and implementing apprenticeship degree efforts.
AFA believes apprenticeship degrees will play an important part in the growth of apprenticeships. Internationally, apprenticeship degrees have proven hugely popular as students and employers find a work-based college degree more affordable, rewarding, and productive. We estimate that there are nearly 29 million high-wage, high growth jobs in the United States that historically have required Bachelor’s degrees and which are apprenticeable. If just 3% of Bachelor degree enrollments were apprenticeship degrees, that would mean an additional 270,000 apprentices.
Apprenticeship degrees enable students to earn a paycheck while attending school and avoid college debt. They better connect higher educational institutions to the world of work and ensure curricula match the needs of the workplace. And they provide employers a mechanism to attract new employees and upskill incumbent workers.
